Overview

Having a modded Minecraft server is a great way to customize your gameplay experience. However, playing with mods is not as simple as just uploading them to your server. For every mod that goes into your server, it has to be run client-side. Minecraft by default does not run mods so you need to use a mod loader, Forge. Many times when adding mods, players will use modpack launchers. These are especially useful as they install Forge easily and allow the modpacks to be launched straight from the launchers platform. Some of the most popular modpack launchers include Twitch, Technic, ATLauncher, Voidswrath, and FTB. Adding mods to an existing modpack is quite easy, and we will be walking you through each step on how to.

This tutorial does not cover how to add mods to the default launcher. You can find our guide on doing so here.

How to download mods

  1. You need to get the mods from CurseForge or the mod author's official site. Doing this ensures that you won't get corrupted files or viruses.
  2. Once you decide on a mod you want, click the name to open the mod page.
  3. Open the Files tab to view the versions. To the right of the version you want, press download. It's best to download the latest recommended update for your version of Minecraft.
  4. Head back to the mods page and open the Relations tab. This is very important as these are the mods you need for it to work correctly. If you don't download the dependencies, the mod will not function properly or can cause the game to crash.

How to add mods to an existing modpack

Twitch

  1. Open the Twitch Desktop App, go to the Mods tab, then to My Modpacks.
  2. Right-click the modpack you would like to add additional mods to and press Open Folder.
  3. Head into the mods folder and drag your desired mods inside of it, then go back to Twitch.
  4. Click Play on the pack, this will open Minecraft. Go ahead and click Play on the launcher and all of the mods you added should be loaded.

Technic

  1. Open the Technic Launcher and go to the Modpacks tab at the top.
  2. You will see a list of your modpacks here, click the modpack that you would like to add additional mods to.
  3. Click Modpack Options towards the top right of the pack.
  4. Press the Open button to the right of the directory listing, then enter the mods folder.

  1. Open the ATLauncher and navigate to the Instances tab to the right of the launcher.
  2. Now you will see a list of the mod packs that you have downloaded, scroll to the modpack that you would like to add the additional mods to and click Open Folder.
  3. Open the mods folder and you can now drag in your desired mods. Head back to the launcher and click Play on the pack, this will launch Minecraft.

  3. To the top right of the page, click on "Open Folder".
  4. Enter the mods folder and drag in the mods. Close the explorer and head back to the launcher.

Common Issues

Minecraft Crashes on startup

When adding a mod to an existing modpack, it is very important that you check to make sure you are not missing any dependency mods. If you are, it can cause your game to crash upon loading.

Getting Mod Rejections when trying to join a server

Having a mod rejection either means that the mod is not the same version as the one from the server, or that you are missing a mod on your Minecraft client that is on your server or vice versa. Double-check that your mods folder from client-side matches with the server-side mods folder. Although, keep in mind that you do not need to add client-side only mods to the server. For example, Optifine needs to stay only on your Minecraft client, it does not go onto the server.
